[QUESTION] Attenuators: Rivera RockCrusher vs THD HotPlate vs Weber Mass ? I've had my Dr. Z Route 66 for a few years now and when I first bought it, I already knew an attenuator would be something I'd kinda need, but like an idiot the price point scared me off, even though I had just dropped 800 for a Dr. Z.

I've had it probably 20 years and still use it. It attenuates via a continuous pot so no preset increments. It came with a bright switch which I don't use.

It works very well on amps that are 4 ohms, decently with 8 ohms and barely makes a dent on 16 ohm amps. Not a lot of loss in quality until you reach the rheostat for bedroom use. I'm currently waiting on a 16 ohm THD hotplate ($200ish used).
Dec 11, 2013· The Ultimate attenuator is a load box and power amp, and if you set the level all the way up and switch it in and out, it sounds identical, proving that the attenuated sound matches the raw tone. Switch it back in and turn the level down though, and it gets softer and fizzier at low levels and loses punch. That's not the attenuator doing that.
